The 2026 Dunhuang Lantern Festival, themed "Millennial Splendor · Dunhuang in Its Glory," is being held from January 1st to March 31st. It transforms the ancient lantern-lit scenes depicted in the cave murals into a modern, technology-powered feast of light and shadow, offering an immersive experience for visitors from home and abroad.
In the early hours of January 1st, 2026, in Dunhuang, Gansu Province, the "Millennial Splendor · Dunhuang in Its Glory" Lantern Festival attracted tens of thousands of local residents and tourists for the New Year's countdown. "Some lantern shapes are inspired by animals from the Mogao Grottoes murals, and others are in the form of the Chinese zodiac, integrating traditional Chinese culture. Overall, they are extremely exquisite and splendid," said Yang Wenru, a tourist from Shanghai, on January 1st in Dunhuang.
On the evening of December 31st, 2025, the Dunhuang Lantern Festival held its lighting ceremony, drawing tens of thousands of citizens and visitors. The mascot "Dun Deng Deng" made its debut first, eliciting cheers from the crowd. A 15-meter-high flying horse lantern group stood with head held high and wings spread, while a 9-meter-high auspicious gourd lantern shimmered with light, carrying the beautiful寓意 (yùyì - implied meaning) of enduring blessings and prosperity.
"The core of the event is to root it in Dunhuang's cultural heritage, making the millennia-old Silk Road culture palpable and engaging through diverse scenarios," said Zhang Xiaoning, Deputy Director of the Dunhuang Culture and Tourism Bureau. She explained that the festival deeply explores core resources such as Mogao Grottoes murals, Dunhuang manuscripts, and Silk Road culture. Following the thematic threads of "Flying Apsaras Embracing the Moon," "Symphony of the Great Desert," and "Twelve Zodiac Hours," it combines Dunhuang elements with modern lighting technology and international artistic expression to create 22 large-scale themed lantern groups and over 1,200 distinctive lanterns, transforming Dunhuang culture from static display into dynamic传播 (chuánbō - dissemination/communication).
The festival activities encompass six major themes: the Lighting Ceremony, Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibitions, New Year Goods Market, Silk Road Cuisine, Western Regions Wine Culture, and Shangyuan (Lantern Festival) Lanterns. Within the Dunhuang Night Market, six themed functional areas have been established: Shazhou Hundred Flavors, Zhang Qian Market, Han Pass Hundred Performances, Uyghur Tavern, Persian Music and Dance, and Changle Art Workshop. Approximately 300 various特色 (tèsè - characteristic/featured) activities have been planned.
The Dunhuang Lantern Festival has enjoyed widespread fame since ancient times. The Old Book of Tang records, "For the Lantern Festival, Chang'an ranks first, Dunhuang second." A millennium ago, the grand spectacle of lighting lamps for blessings in front of the Mogao Grottoes was etched into the cave murals, becoming a testament to the festive joy of the ancients. This lantern festival continues this millennia-old cultural lineage, reviving ancient memories within modern光影 (guāngyǐng - light and shadow).
The festival also innovatively introduced an interactive "Lantern Festival Silver Note" mechanism. 100,000 special silver notes incorporating Dunhuang mural elements serve as exquisite souvenirs and "passcodes" for participating in interactive activities.
"We have integrated 'ancient costumes with new play' and NPC (non-player character) role-playing into the lantern festival," said Wang Jingwei, General Manager of the Dunhuang Culture & Tourism Shazhou Night Market Scenic Area Operation and Management Co., Ltd. Musicians in仿古 (fǎnggǔ - antique-style) costumes, merchants holding treasure trays, and the wealth-bringing mascot "Cai Dong Cai" weave through the sea of lanterns. Through dance performances and situational interactions, they distribute notes to the public. Citizens and visitors can use these silver notes to participate in multiple experiences such as "Silk Road Games" and "Huxuan Dance Competition."
