February 25 (Xinhua) — During the Year of the Horse Spring Festival, Dunhuang City in Gansu Province orchestrated a vibrant array of over 30 high-quality cultural tourism activities and multiple attractive incentives under the theme "Chinese New Year·Dunhuang Tour." These included the Dunhuang Lantern Festival, a barbecue competition, and a grand drone show, among seven major categories. The initiatives deeply integrated the city's millennium-old cultural heritage with the festive spirit of the New Year, allowing visitors to experience the charm of the Silk Road immersively, thereby boosting the holiday economy and invigorating the winter-spring tourism market.
According to statistics from the Dunhuang cultural and tourism department, during the 2026 Spring Festival holiday, the city received a total of 809,300 tourists, with tourism spending estimated at 479 million yuan, marking year-on-year increases of 48.11% and 38.42% respectively compared to the 2025 Spring Festival holiday.
Starting from the fourth day of the lunar new year, vibrant Shehuo (folk performances) parades kicked off in Dunhuang. The resounding sound of gongs and drums echoed through the city's streets and alleys. Traditional folk programs such as yangko dances, land boat performances, dragon and lion dances took turns captivating the audience, while specially themed floats made stunning appearances. Performers, dressed in splendid costumes and full of energy, conveyed their best New Year wishes to tourists through these authentic folk customs, showcasing Dunhuang's rich cultural charm.
Where millennium-old heritage meets modern technology, Dunhuang's New Year shines with a unique brilliance. This Spring Festival, a spectacular drone light show illuminated the night sky over Dunhuang. Using the night sky as a canvas and light as their brush, the drones intricately blended classic Dunhuang elements – such as the Mogao Grottoes, camel caravans on the Silk Road, and gracefully dancing Feitian – with blessings for the Year of the Horse. This vividly portrayed the convergence and fusion of the thousand-year Silk Road culture and modern technology, delivering a breathtaking visual feast.
This light show was deeply integrated with the Overpass Concert and the Dunhuang Grand Bazaar. Melodious singing, paired with the dazzling light display, continuously fueled Dunhuang's nighttime economy, turning it into a popular social media hot spot during the festive season.
